Located in Kampong Bharu, at a crossroad between Jalan Mahmud and Jalan Hamzah, a simple yet appealing in design, the house made up of entirely from wood will now has to be brought down to make way for a more contemporary and common design, still to function to house a living soul.

Constraint by weather over the years and depleting wood craftsman or carpenter, the house bear a humble physical conditions but from afar still possess that magical charm.

Unique features of a Malacca house is the veranda which carry lots of creative motif and serves as functional air passageway.

This house is a 12 pillars structured and almost all is made up of Cengal hardwood. It was reported via a study from Architecture Faculty of Uitm University, the wood came in logs after which it was chiselled into a pillars. The hardness of the wood is so apparent that no nails can pry through.

FOOD IN KAMPONG BARU DURING 60S

During the late 60s in kampong Baru, pedlars and hawkers usually market their food along the streets as there are limited number of food outlet at that particular time. As I can recall, food outlet operated by local, can be found in Pasar Minggu (Sunday Market), in front of Masjid Jamek beside the now Kampong Baru Medical Centre, opposite UniKL/DBKL, opposite HKL towards now bulatan Pahang and Chow Kit Road.

Those pedlars have distinct identification either from their own sound producing gadget or simply their shouting, which more or less likened to a jingles.

Notable among those pedlars are:

1.    Rojak Mamak, pedlars on foot.

2.    Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, using tricycle.

3.    Roti using bicycle.

4.    Ice Cream using bicycle – with fortune wheel.

5.    Kacang Putih  (beans of various type) on foot.

6.    Stone Candy (cut using chisel) on bicycle.

7.    Soft Candy on bicycle (using special gadget attached to the bicycle pedal to act as wheels to produce the candy).

Whenever we are being ask by our parent to stop this pedlars, those selling rojak or mee, we often bring our own plate, hence it was an unwritten rule that the pedlars would give us more since they do not need to use their paper for packaging. On some occasion, we simply request the food pedlars to exclude the eggs or the veggies as we have our own to add. (cost saving in today’s term).

The ice cream pedlars were cunning with their wheels of fortune, where whenever you buy, you have an opportunity to spin to gain more than one ice cream. There was even a prize for six ice cream but on closer look, the stopper is closely planted and as such rather impossible to win. But on one particulars instance, I and my naughty colleague manage to fool the pedlars. When I spin the wheel, one of my friend distract the pedlar, and I have cheated to place the pointer on the magical six, and four of us share the reward.

Today I hardly see this pedlars or hawker anymore except for the ice cream seller. As time passed by, we now experience different mode of business model. Now every fast food outlet have personal delivery on bike. You no longer wait to hear their sound or jingles by the roadside to stop to buy the food but everything is just a call away.

THINGS ARE SIMPLE THEN

Going back 40 years ago, I could still recall how life is simple without the complexity now. Recalling those years, I was born and raised in Kampong Baru, life was so much straight forward.

How I remember, mosque or surau do not actually employ Imam or Bilal. Somehow this guys just volunteer themselves for the post, or perhaps through the urge from the Qariah (surrounding community). As to appreciate their services, the community association will normally apportioned certain token from donation collected.

In this respect, we the teenager will be assisting the Imam or Bilal for religious occasion, especially during the month of Ramadhan (fasting month), where at every end session of the “Tarawih”, prayer only done during the month, we will be there preparing food for serving as well as cleaning up.

Though we are not explicitly taught about volunteerism or neither are there volunteer campaign to recruit volunteers, we just did on our own accord just as hearing from friends and neighbour.

For Kampong Baru folks, it was quite a normal phenomenon to celebrate either “Äidil Fitri” or “AdildilAdha”, in Kampong Baru itself on the first 3 days. Regardless, where their hometown is, nobody will leave Kampong Baru until they celebrate the occasion in Kampong Baru.

As kids then, we are not really particular on dress or shoes for the celebration so long that it was new. Most of the time, when our parent bring us along for shopping, a week before the celebration, the choice is more based on our parent, we just follow their instruction.

Prior to “Aidil Fitri”, during the fasting month, almost all the houses will be decorating their house compound with lighting (kerosene based), either using the used milk can or the bamboo. The sights was so happening during the night and the container either metal can or bamboo is prepared by us with the help of our parents.

During the first 3 days of the celebration, every houses are open for anyone that wish to visit. Every guess that came, they are being given a warm hospitality.

One aspect that I can summarise during those time is, though money was hard to come by, it does not stop us from being happy and relationship as a community was based more on honesty rather than a person position or his wealth.

SERVE WITH HONOUR AND CARE

Having been admitted to hospital on critical illness 3 times within a span of less than one year and duration on each hospitalization not less than one week makes me fully aware of the duties of a nurse. Since during those period I was hospitalized in the intensive care units, the job as nurse was so much felt.

In a life threatening situation, any hospital patient will be highly dependent on the nurse. Well as for me, it was more apparent since I was highly sedated for 4 days upon my emergency admission.

Recalling those scary moment, I was shocked to find out soon after regaining my consciousness, I was talking nonsense since I was still high on morphine. My wife told me on her visits that the nurses had diligently attend to me without any hesitation.

As much as they (the nurses), care for me like a baby from cleaning me up to feeding me, they also perform needful duties like utilizing the apparatus to vacuum my thick phlegm from my throat to clear my breathing passage way. It was needless to say awfully painful during the process, but they did it with confident. Apart from caring for me, they (the nurse) indeed have a strong heart to complete their task even though when it seems unbearable. During such occasion, my wife would normally leave me with the nurses as she could not bear watching me going through the excruciating  process.

In another instance, one other patient whom was emotionally disturbed, have to be subdued by the nurses despite they being verbally and physically abuse. They finally able to calm the patient without the assistance from a security guard or a doctor.

There’s one other patient that refuses to eat and practically become unmotivated to recover from a heart bypass, but the nurses were consistently giving her encouraging words where she finally able to overcome her psychological negativity.

All in all, I have high respect for this ladies for their unwavering dedication in their work which has been a significant factors in most patient recovery apart from the doctors and the medicine.

Your noble contribution to the industry and society will never be forgotten. Nurses, wherever you are, my deepest appreciation and salute to you.
